What are the types of colorimeters?

Colorimeters are instruments used to determine the exact composition of a color, because they have the ability to provide accurate and objective measurements of color, providing accurate information of color intensity and hue. They are frequently used instruments in colorimetry, a branch of science that is responsible for the study of colors and, especially, how to measure them.

These devices generally work through silicon detectors equipped with 3 or 4 interferential filters. And by appropriately combining their respective properties, we can correctly simulate the trichromatic perception of the color stimulus of the average human observer in daylight.

Uses of colorimeters

Colorimeters are currently used in color classification, color calibration of printers, absorbance testing, correction and error elimination of monitors and displays, color-based polymer characterization, and chemical concentration testing.

That is, this equipment can be employed in industries of plastic, electronics, painting, ink, textiles, garments, printing and dyeing, food, medicine, cosmetics, scientific research institutes, schools and laboratories. Since it can not only help to perform color combination and color management studies, but also can control product quality management.

Types of colorimeters

Spectroradiometer

A spectroradiometer is an instrument that allows quantification of the distribution of the spectral power emitted by the light source. That is, it measures how intense the color is, since it accurately measures luminance, glow and chromaticity. It has an integrated optical measurement and orientation system that measures light from approximately 380 nm to 780 nm, and is widely used mainly in research and development laboratories due to its high precision to analyze lighting in a production, as well as to carry out quality control, as well as to calibrate liquid crystal displays that are made for televisions and laptops.

It is a device composed of a set of configurable modules that facilitate its use in all types of optical systems. Its basic components include its light source, a monochromator and a radiometer or detection system. The equipment also has a varied set of lighting systems: arc, halogen and spectral lamps. It has two monochromators, two radiometers and a significant number of detectors covering the entire visible and infrared spectrum.

Tristimulus Colorimeter

This type of colorimeter is used to determine color in digital images, because it works by measuring colors transmitted by light sources, such as monitors, lamps and screens. When applied to the screen surface, the tristimulus colorimeter can accurately record the colors reproduced by the screen, thanks to the action of a series of photodetectors equipped with filters.

The tristimulus colorimeter works by collecting a limited number of broadband spectral energy readings along the visible spectrum through the use of filtered photodetectors, and then subsequently profiling and calibrating the output devices. The measured values are used to calculate the LCD profile coefficients.

Densitometer

The densitometer is a device that measures the optical density or degree of darkness in semi-transparent materials or with reflective surfaces. This density is characterized by being the level of darkness that exists in the film or print, it is considered a highly applicable and important equipment in the photographic and printing industry.

The operation of this equipment consists in the emission of light towards a particular point on the analyzed surface. This is obtained from a series of lenses that capture the degree of reflection and light emission. The light that is produced is collected by a series of readers, who are responsible for interpreting the values electronically. The results obtained are compared with another reference number, showing the final measurement result on the main screen.

Spectrophotometer

It is an instrument that allows measuring the reflection properties of a color. Using light wavelength functions, the use of this equipment is mainly based on color development and formulation, research and industry development. Spectrophotometers measure color across the spectrum.

These devices are considered to be the most accurate and sophisticated color measuring instruments available for color quality control and color formulation. They are presented in table models, for quality control and research in laboratories, or in portable mode for works in factory or field of study.
